Jack on Lewis impact, bowling strength and Buckingham reunion

Jack White Praises Yorkshire’s New Bowling Coach Mick Lewis for a Transformative Start

Yorkshire’s new bowling coach, Mick Lewis, has already left a strong impression on Jack White, who describes working with the former Australian quick as “amazing” since his arrival just over a month ago.

Lewis, who joined from Essex alongside head coach Anthony McGrath, officially began his role at Headingley in early March. He joined the squad during their pre-season tour in Abu Dhabi and has quickly become a key figure among the players, particularly with the bowlers.

“Mick’s been brilliant—absolutely amazing,” said White. “He’s someone who instantly makes you feel at ease. I’ve been refining a few aspects of my game, and he’s made the whole process really clear and straightforward. There’s no unnecessary chatter—just precise, effective guidance.”

White emphasized Lewis’s personality as another strength: “He’s a real character, and that’s important in a long season. You need someone who brings energy and keeps things enjoyable. That’s what cricket should be about—enjoying the journey.”

The 32-year-old seamer made a strong impression on his Yorkshire debut over the weekend against Hampshire, taking five wickets in the match. He picked up 3-51 in the first innings and followed up with 2-34 in the second. Head coach McGrath praised his performance as “fantastic.”

Now, White is preparing for his first home appearance at Headingley against Worcestershire on Friday. Coincidentally, it’s the same ground where he last played for Northamptonshire in September.

“I’ve loved bowling alongside the lads here,” White added. “Coady is just exceptional—I remember watching him bowl last season and thinking how great it would be to play with him. Hilly, Cliffy—they’re all incredibly skilled. I’m excited to contribute to this attack.”

However, Yorkshire face some injury challenges ahead of the clash. Youngster Ben Cliff picked up a side injury during the Hampshire match and is awaiting scan results. Meanwhile, overseas signing Ben Sears is nursing a minor heel issue and is expected to make his debut in Durham on April 18.

Despite the setbacks, White remains optimistic: “Injuries are part of the game, but guys like Milnes and Revis are on the mend. When everyone’s fit—and with our overseas players rotating—we’ll have a strong, fresh bowling unit throughout the season.”

Following Sears, Australian fast bowler Jordan Buckingham is set to join the side for four Championship matches in May. White is especially looking forward to his return, having shared the new ball with Buckingham at Northamptonshire in 2023.

“He’s a fierce competitor,” White said. “When he played with us, he was only 21 or 22 but already had that edge. He’s got real pace and energy. We got along really well, and I’m looking forward to teaming up again.”
